April Corder, left, Neal Campus-Kingman’s precollege studies manager, talks with Dorine Barber and Chandler Flannigan about GED orientation and testing.KINGMAN - President Obama is encouraging everyone to take at least some college courses. For those who are not confident that they would be successful in college, Mohave Community College has programs to help.

Transitional Studies helps high school graduates who have been out of school refresh their skills in math and English. The General Education Development (GED) program provides orientation, refresher coursework and the GED exam; and English Language Acquisition for Adults helps people from all over the world adapt English as their second language.

Students registering at MCC for the first time are given an assessment of their comprehension in reading, writing and math. If their recall is below the ninth-grade level, they can take classes in the areas where they need improvement, then retake the assessment for college class readiness.

The reading portion of those classes assists students with comprehension of the written word, focusing on understanding and retaining what has been read. The communication (writing) class covers correct grammar and usage as well as writing structure. The math class focuses on basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, with emphasis on fractions and decimals – also touching on basic geometry and algebra.

Those who were unable to complete their high school education can complete a GED at MCC. More than 400 students a year earn the GED through MCC’s program. Earning that diploma can mean as much as 30 percent more in income over one’s lifetime of work.

The English Language Acquisition program evaluates the verbal and reading proficiency of individuals who did not learn English as their first language. Depending on their ability, they are placed in beginning, intermediate or advanced classes. Once proficient in English, they can move into credit courses at MCC.

Over the years, students from India, Spain, Mexico, Romania, Russia, Brazil, almost all European countries and several throughout Central America, Asia and Africa have taken advantage of the ELAA program to help them adapt to their new home.

“Our programs are designed to prepare these students to enter college classes with the academic skills to excel,” said Danette Bristle, dean of instruction at MCC.

To make college preparatory classes more accessible, they are scheduled throughout the year with a choice of day and evening sessions.
