Dias resigns as head of Bullhead Regional Economic Development Authority

BULLHEAD CITY – For the second time in less than a year the Bullhead Regional Economic Development Authority is looking for a new president and CEO.

Tony Dias, who took the job last summer following the resignation of Richard Adams in June, e-mailed his resignation to BREDA Board of Directors Chairman Leigh Verley on Saturday.

“He stated it was management differences, different styles,” Verley said.

But, there may have been a conflict that ran deeper than simply style differences.

“We were looking into a couple things, but then he went ahead and resigned so we stopped looking,” Verley said.

The BREDA board is putting together a new job description and reevaluating its potential pay scale before it begins advertising in search of a replacement for Dias.

“We’ve started the preliminary, getting together our job description. Trying to come up with a job description and knowing what we can offer anybody that wishes to apply. It will probably take us a couple weeks to get together what we want to look for,” Verley said. “Anybody that wants to apply in the meantime, they are free to contact us and send us their information and resumes. With the way the economy is we’re hoping there is someone qualified out there who can take the position since we can’t compete with large cities salarywise.”

Dias took over BREDA just before the national economy began its dramatic downhill slide and at a time when numerous new retailers were locating in the region. Due to changes in the economy and growth in the types of retailers in the area, the BREDA board may seek to refocus the Authority’s short- and long-term goals.

“Right now the retail sector it has been an impossibility to get anyone to want to expand retail-wise. We probably won’t worry too much about retail right now. We helped to bring some of the retail stores that we wanted in to town,” Verley said. “We will probably want to look at new money like light industrial. Typically when you bring in light industrial you have some local people who buy the goods, but when they sell outside the area that is when you bring the fresh money into the area.”

Verley also indicated that recruitment of a commercial air service provider may be a key to recruiting light industry to the area.

“Air service, it probably does (affect recruitment) some, especially with industrial. They have to fly in and out, so it probably hurts some,” he said. “Basically, here we’ll just get a branch type thing with their main offices somewhere else. They need to be able to get in and out.”

BREDA is funded by Bullhead City and membership dues. It is located at 1848 Hwy. 95, Suite 104, in Bullhead City. The phone number is (928) 704-6374.
